For interview work, position your key light between 30 and 45 degrees to the camera-subject axis — roughly one to one-and-a-half metres away from the camera on the side — and raise it slightly above the subject’s eyeline, aiming it down at approximately a 45-degree angle. This overhead angle is critical because it naturally lifts the cheekbones, reduces shadows under the nose and chin, and avoids the unflattering “upward jawline” look that happens when a light sits below eyeline.
The key light’s intensity determines how contrasty your image feels. A strong, undiffused key will create deep shadows on the fill side of the face, which can look dramatic but also leave the shadow side nearly black. Most interview setups work better with a softer key — either through a large softbox, a diffused LED panel or simply bouncing the light through a reflector. Softness is about the apparent size of the light source relative to the subject. A small bare bulb creates hard shadows with crisp edges. A large octabox or window produces soft shadows that feather gradually into the lit area. For flattering people work, soft light is almost always the right call.
We apply the same soft-light thinking in food and product photography. The principle is identical: large, soft key equals attractive, dimensional results.
Fill light: controlling shadow depth
If the key light shapes the subject, the fill light controls how dark the shadows become. It sits on the opposite side of the camera from the key, at roughly the same distance from the subject, and is set to a lower power level — typically one-half to one-quarter the intensity of the key light. The exact ratio is a creative decision. A 2:1 key-to-fill ratio produces noticeable contrast and a bit of a moody feel, while a 1:1 ratio gives you a more even, broadcast-style look.
You do not need a second dedicated light fixture to create fill. A white foam core reflector held on the shadow side of the subject will bounce key light back into the dark areas at a much lower intensity and is often more controllable than a second lamp. A silver reflector adds more punch; a white one is softer and more neutral. For interview setups where mobility matters, a single key light with a reflector is often more practical than hauling a second LED panel, and the results are nearly indistinguishable from a two-light setup to viewers.
Fill can also be negative. Instead of adding a second light, some cinematographers place a flag or black card on the highlight side of the face near the lens to absorb spill and deepen the shadow side intentionally. This is called negative fill, and it is a useful trick when your environment is so bright that even a low-power fill light would overexpose the shadow side.
Back light: separating subject from background
The back light is the element that most people skip and then wonder why their subject looks flat. Positioned behind and above the subject — typically one to two metres behind, elevated to 45 degrees above the head and angled downward — the back light creates a thin rim or halo of light around the hair and shoulders. This rim tells the viewer’s eye, “this is a three-dimensional person in a three-dimensional space,” and it prevents the subject from merging into whatever is behind them.
The back light does not need to be powerful. In fact, too much back light creates an obvious halo that looks artificial. Start with the back light about one stop below the key light intensity and adjust from there. If you are using a hair light (a back light aimed specifically at the hair), raise it higher and angle it more steeply. If you are using a shoulder or rim light, bring it closer to head height and aim it at the edge of the shoulder nearest the camera. A practical back light can even be a small LED bar or even a desk lamp with a snoot, positioned behind the subject and aimed at the wall — the bounce off the wall produces a softer rim that is very forgiving for beginner setups.

The rim of light around the trainer during movement sequences gave the footage depth and made the subject pop even during fast cuts, which is exactly what a well-placed back light should do.
Building your setup step by step
Start with the key light. Set it to full power (or a comfortable mid-range if you are using dimmable LEDs), position it at roughly 45 degrees to one side of the camera and slightly above the subject’s eyeline. Have the subject sit or stand in position and look at the lens. Check your exposure with a light meter or your camera’s waveform and histogram. The key light alone should give you a usable but clearly one-sided image with hard shadows on the far side of the face.
Next, add the fill. Start with the fill light at full power but positioned far to the side, then move it progressively closer to the shadow side of the subject while dialling down intensity. Watch the shadow under the nose and along the far cheek soften. Stop when the shadow side of the face has enough detail to read clearly — you should be able to see the shape of the eye and the outline of the jaw on the shadow side, not just a dark silhouette.
Finally, add the back light. Position it behind the subject, raised above head height. Turn it on and observe the separation it creates between the subject’s head and whatever is behind them. Adjust the angle to create an even rim across the top of the head and the nearest shoulder. If the rim is uneven — brighter on one side than the other — rotate the back light slightly or adjust its horizontal angle. The goal is a clean, consistent edge that frames the subject without drawing attention to itself.

A note on colour temperature. If you are mixing natural window light with artificial lamps, make sure the colour temperatures match — ideally both at 5600K for a neutral daylight look, or both at 3200K for warm tungsten. A key light at 5600K and a fill at 3200K will produce a colour mismatch that is very noticeable on camera and difficult to fix in post. Most modern LED panels let you dial in exact colour temperature, which removes this variable almost entirely.
Common setup mistakes and how to fix them
The most common error we see when reviewing early interview work is placing the key light too close to the camera axis. When the key sits directly beside the lens or between the lens and the subject, the light comes in flat and frontal — the face has no modelling, no depth and looks two-dimensional. The fix is simply to pull the key light out to at least 30 degrees from the camera-subject axis, which is easy to do with even a small amount of space on either side of the camera.
The second frequent mistake is over-lighting the shadow side. A heavy-handed fill light erases all the dimension the key light creates, leaving a flat, lifeless image. The solution is to use a lower-power fill or a reflector rather than a second lamp at full strength. Remember that viewers are used to some shadow on one side of the face — it is natural and flattering. The goal is shadow control, not shadow elimination.
A third mistake is forgetting to turn off practical lights in the room. A window, overhead lamp or computer screen behind the subject can create competing light sources that confuse the camera’s auto-exposure or produce a colour temperature clash. Before rolling, identify all the light sources in the room and either turn them off, block them or match your key light to their colour temperature. This step alone eliminates a huge class of frustrating post-production fixes.
Lighting patterns beyond the basic three-point setup
Once the three-point foundation is solid, you can explore specific lighting patterns that each create a distinct mood. Rembrandt lighting places the key light higher and more to one side so that a small triangle of light — called the Rembrandt triangle — appears on the shadow side of the nose. It is named after the Dutch painter because it mirrors the lighting in many of his portraits, and it produces a classic, slightly dramatic look that reads well in interview contexts.
Butterfly lighting positions the key light directly in front of and above the subject, creating a small butterfly-shaped shadow under the nose. It is flattering for angular faces, frequently used in beauty and fashion work, and gives a clean, elegant look. The trade-off is that you lose the side modelling that three-point provides, so it works best when the background is also intentionally styled.
Loop lighting moves the key light just off the nose-axis so the nose shadow falls gently down and to one side without touching the cheek — creating a small loop shape. It is the most universally flattering pattern for average face shapes and is the default for most corporate and documentary interview work because it is reliable, natural-looking and easy to execute consistently across multiple subjects.

Three-point lighting was designed for studio environments, but the principles translate directly to on-location interviews with a few adjustments. In a bright room with large windows, use the window as your key light and add fill and back lights to control the contrast. Position the subject facing the window and use a reflector or a small LED on the shadow side as fill. For the back light, a small LED bar behind and above the subject creates sufficient separation.
In a dim or dark location — a restaurant, a home interior, an event space — the three-point model still applies but you will likely need to suppress or replace existing light sources. Turn off practical lights, set your key to provide the primary exposure, and use fill and back lights to sculpt. The advantage of a controlled location is that you can place black cards or flags around the subject to prevent light spill onto walls and floors, which gives you a cleaner background without needing a full backdrop.
For outdoor interviews, the sun becomes your key light and you work from there. Open shade — the shadow side of a building or tree — provides the most flattering natural key because the light is already large and soft. Add a reflector for fill and, if you have a crew member with a second reflector or a small portable LED, use it as a back light. Overcast days are actually ideal for interview work because the cloud acts as a giant softbox diffusing the sunlight into even, shadowless illumination — in those conditions, a single reflector for fill and a small back light will complete the three-point setup.
Setting your camera for interview lighting
Good lighting does not help if your camera settings fight against it. Shoot at a flat colour profile if your camera allows it — most DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and smartphones now offer log or flat profiles that preserve highlight and shadow detail for colour grading in post. Expose for the key side of the face and let the shadow side fall naturally. Relying on auto-exposure will push the shadow side brighter than you intend as the camera tries to average the exposure across the frame.
White balance is non-negotiable. Set it manually to match your key light’s colour temperature rather than leaving it on auto. A consistent white balance across an entire interview series — multiple subjects shot on the same day — means you spend minutes in post instead of hours correcting colour mismatches. For multi-camera interviews, record a white or grey card at the start of each setup so you have a colour reference during editing.
Shutter speed should generally be set to twice your frame rate — 1/50s for 25fps, 1/60s for 30fps, 1/120s for 60fps. Going faster than this will make motion look stuttery; going slower will introduce motion blur. Aperture controls your depth of field, and for interview work most productions shoot at f/2.8 to f/4 to keep the subject sharp while gently blurring the background. The back light becomes more important as you open up the aperture because a shallower depth of field makes it easier for the subject to visually merge with the background if there is no rim light separating them.
